And since you don't always have the benefit of a Javascript programmer, it's kind of nice to have options.
How to Design an Awesome Flyer (Even if You’re Not a Designer)

I think I might just start pointing non-designers to this page when they're designing flyers, slide decks, brochures, etc. It boils down to "put text on a grid and use large graphics" but they just do a great job of explaining it and, as the 4th commenter noted, it's a lot better than the typical Microsoft Word catastrophe.
